7 am   5 of the kids signed up for the WX Mario Kart 5k.  When it was time to leave, only one came.  I lost Anna to a lack of finisher medals, Ash to pukes, Jens&Nena to laziness.  Grace toed the line, but couldn't finish.  Oops.

I didn't wear a watch, but ran hard.  I came in at 19:34.  I couldn't make a move on the guy in front of me, even though I saw him walking briefly.  On the bright side, nobody passed me.  I love how races string out.  I was trying not to suffer ill-effects of the flu, and felt glad to hold things together.  Grace got feeling bad about halfway through, and cut back to the park.  I didn't know this, and back-tracked the course for over a mile looking for her.  When I got to a family pushing a guy in a wheelchair, I concluded she was no longer attempting the race.  I finally found her wandering around the park at 7:50, so a half hour of fruitless searching.  I wish I could have found her in time to help her to the finish.

No part of a 5k ever feels good, except later in the day when the pukey feeling has subsided.  Today I feel a bit more profoundly appreciative of having the capacity to run.  On Sunday I visited a fellow in the hospital.  He has spent the last quarter century paralyzed from the neck down, and when I left his room, I was just awestruck and uplifted having met him.  We visited for over an hour, and he never once complained.   We don't know how lucky we are.

Nice report Kam. Sounds like my family :)

This race just sounds like a lot of fun. Sounds like you kept it together and you had a great time. I want a sub 20 5k... Still on my goal list.

I'm impressed with your time off of no 5k training. Way to go!

So a guy was walking and still beat you? Was he doing the Jeff Galloway program? Geeze, some speedy intervals there.

Also, I agree the 5k hurts now. Thinking of a 1 mile time trail gives me near PTSD symptoms. Lets do some mile trials up Freedom Hills this summer. You'll be sub 2:50 then.

Haha we are not only on the same training schedules but the same paces too. Great race! Yes I agree I am very thankful for the health and strength to run everyday. Very blessed.

Not far off from where you were last year. Impressive since it seemed you were more in a training mode last year. Are you still up for Ragnar?

Great race Kam, and great perspective. We are blessed.

I agree, that's speedy. Great job keeping it together. And one thing we runners need sometimes is some good, old-fashioned perspective. :-)

Thanks for the kind words.

Burt: something about paving material on the road to hell

Bec: you'll get that sub 20, but worry about that after UVM

Tara: he was doing the brief walk of shame at the end, but not brief enough for me to catch him.

Andy: I guess I'm at roughly the same place; on any given day a 5k time is probably +/- 30 seconds, plus as you know, the timing set-up isn't great.

Russ: 50k is coming up, then we have a date on July 24th...it means I don't have to sign up for the 10k, thank goodness.

Neasts: I love reading about your trail runs. If you ever venture to the far north, I could show you my section of BST.

Nice speedy race Kam.

What a great opportunity to visit with that man. All too often we get caught up in our own day to day 'problems' and don't realize how minor they are compared to those of others.
