Coming into this race, I knew I was undertrained.  I guess I underestimated how much.  I thought I could reasonably expect to run around 3:20; if everything went right, maybe even BQ.

1st half was 1:38.  In every marathon, I typically go out fast and try to bank some time against the second half slow-down.  Today I was going to run even splits for the first time, and try to leave some in the tank for the end.  1st half was right on track.  The conditions were nice and cool.  There was no wind.  Effort level was pretty low, even climbing the hills.  I was a bit daunted by the prospect of running a negative split for the first time in my life, but it felt doable at the half.  A few miles later, the wheels started coming off, and the obvious deficiencies in my training became clear.

At 16, the mile split was again over 7:30, so I knew bq was out of the question.  3:20 was still reachable.  At mile 17 I took an "act of faith" GU.  I didn't feel great, and definitely didn't want the gel, but knew I'd need it to have a respectable finish.  Gag, puke, belch, etc.   It turns out I could have skipped.  During mile 18, my left hamstring started cramping.  By mile 19, the left IT-band was locking up.  It was Galloway the rest of the way, running for 3-5 minutes at a time, until the knee locked up and forced me to walk.

Oh yeah, at the half it got really windy down the canyon.  Windy canyon and UVM seem to be synonyms.  It was discouraging, but had nothing to do with my slowing pace and lackluster second half.  I was pleased to see the organizers provided porta potties this year.  I didn't need one though, other than the start.

My daughter and friend were waiting for my slow finish.  I got my creamie, and made the slow walk to the car, forgetting to pick up my package drop.

I should re-title this blog, "Regressing to the Mean".  After a nice fall marathon in 2012, I've laid an egg the last two times.  My heart isn't in the running.  I'm not looking for answers...I know what it takes to run better than this.  I just can't find the desire to make the extra effort.

Kam, congratulations on finishing another marathon and doing it faster than 75-80% of humans who run one, and 99.9% faster than those who can't/won't run one. Sorry you had a bad day and that I wasn't there to run with you the last 15 miles. I would have loved to be there. You were well on track for a 3:2X finish until the legs rebelled.

I think the narrative isn't that you've laid an egg the last two times, it's that you had an amazing race in 2012 and you achieved your goal. Simple as that. You are a 3 hour marathoner which few can ever say and when you hit that goal it mentally burst your motivation bubble to go harder, faster, longer. It's completely natural and makes perfect sense. We're not spring chickens and your priorities were more aligned to running for a short time, goal achieved, and your priorities have shifted back to family. My (free & useless) advice is to shift your exercise goals to align with your current priorities so that you can be happy with your results. Is it triathlons? Other sports that better involve the kids? Coaching Tami to achieve her goals? You are my running mentor and I'm so amazed by your results over the years both in running and in life. You're pretty amazing and it shows in what you do, especially with your family.

At the end of the day, finishing a marathon is nothing to sniff at (in your words:) You got in a great workout, learned some things, and finished your 10th marathon. When running becomes your life above else, great things happen in the running world...at a cost. Seems to me like you've figured things out nicely. A sincere congrats to you, Kam.

Tara took the words right out of my mouth. I agree running and training can come w a cost effect on other things in life (sleep, social life, ignoring home duties and chores ect) I know that one from personal experience. Don't be too hard on yourself ya live and learn.

the desire comes and goes. a time to every purpose etc. if it's any comfort, your "sub-par" performance still beats my pr by 5 minutes.

10 marathons must at least earn you "veteran" status.

I find it hard to always have the desire to race fast. It is just to mentally draining to keep it up all the time. Maybe in five years it will return;)

Russ, Tara, Angie,

Thanks for the words of perspective and encouragement. I'm not all that beaten down by this marathon. I think I ran a bit slower than what I trained for, but if I had trained better, probably I wouldn't have knee and cramping issues cropping up. One 20 mile run doesn't get you ready. I was hoping to skate through on experience, but the experience that is most relevant is in the past 2 months, not years. A silver lining to a slower than expected marathon is a quick recovery. My legs feel normal as of Tuesday. Now I just have to decide what's next...

JD, when I'm running the Salmon Marathon at the same age, I hope I can get that pr on the dirt roads.

Josse, I hope it doesn't take five years. I'm sorry your day didn't go as hoped or planned, again. What's your revenge race? A quick turnaround for desnews? or ramp it back up for another assault on sub-3 at St George?

Hey Kam! It was nice to see you at the start. You were looking fit and flashy in your saucony outfit. I can relate a lot to everything you are saying here. I too have hit that "running just doesn't mean to me what it used to" place and I'm not sure if it is a good or a bad thing. I do think you can dig yourself out of it if you decide you want to. You are a great runner and I think you ran as well as you could for the race and you looked great. If all else fails maybe saucony will hire you to re-market the new galloway theory. :)

Seriously, this could be it's own forum. What is going on with 2014? Everyone's mojo is missing, including mine. It's been strange!

Maybe it's just waiting till after July 4th

3:36 is a golden egg for a lot of folks, Kam. I know what you mean though, I'm not feeling nearly as motivated to compete as I was last year. I got a lot more enjoyment out of pacing the 4:10 group at TCM than I did from my last good race.
