Continued from yesterday...

So Van 2 was about 1 hr ahead of expected.  We'd been waiting at the exchange, and had word Warren was 2 miles out.  After soaking all the fun in at the exchange and washing my hands with real soap and water, I was ready to finish off my legs.  I was walking down to the exchange, and decided I better detour into the ball diamond restroom.  It was a good call, unfortunately, Warren arrived a little sooner than nature's final call.  Our only exchange foul-up was my fault; we lost 2-3 minutes.  Feeling bad, I downed a 5 hr. energy, and vowed to make up the time.  I passed lots of runners, but didn't make up much time.  After the 4 legs the night before, my left foot and calf were somewhat unhappy with me.  I responded by running these miles around 8:15 pace.  When I got to the "One mile to go" sign, I turned it on and ran a 7mm to finish.  There was a stream running right by the exchange, so in a Ragnar highlight moment, I took my shoes off and put my feet in for 20 minutes.  That water was COLD, but it numbed my foot down and felt fine for the rest of the day.

So that's about it.  Amy and Andy finished their final legs in similar fashion.  We all decided to skip the finish line, and headed home.  I made it to my driveway by 3:00, cleaned up until 4:00, and went to a BBQ at 6:00.  I checked my weight before the BBQ, and was down to 144; the relay cost me 7 lbs.  I'm back at 149 this morning, after hoovering everything in sight last night.  I don't know when food ever tasted better.

Results aren't up, and I haven't even spoken with any of my Van 2 peops, but I'm very pleased with our performance.  We clawed our way from solitude into the thick of the event, and had a great time.  Hats off to Amy, Andy, Natalie, Steve and Warren.  It was a great time;  I'm looking forward to next year.  It's hard to imagine not spending the third weekend in June on the backroads of the Wasatch.

So which so you like better, the 12 or 6 team? Set me straight if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that the 6 person team is the way to go, 12 seems unruly and not enough individual running to sacrifice a Friday, Saturday and a recovery Sunday. How difficult was this? How would you compare it with marathoning? 33 miles over 24 hours on bad rest and probably bad food sounds like the kind of pain I'm looking for.

Mike, Wasatch Back is a very fun event. After "enjoying" myself in 2009 and 2010, I wanted more of a challenge this year. The 6 person team definitely gave enough. I figured it would be equivalent or incrementally harder than a marathon, and it was. We started so late we avoided a lot of congestion, and only had to deal with half as many exchanges. Usually there are one or several people on your team that are unprepared or inexperienced, so you have to babysit...but this group was fantastic in terms of preparation and self-sufficiency. I had a great time. You would get a lot out of an ultra.

Thanks for putting this shin dig together, Kam. It was a ton of fun (in a sick sort of way). You ran very well. I was expecting to see the same amount of weight loss considering how much we ran and how little we ate but I didn't lose a single pound. What is up with that?

way to go, team mk ultra. you guys all did a great job. i couldn't believe some of those legs! i am glad you enjoyed the challenge and had a good time. the van i was driving was in a similar situation as you -- absolutely no one on the course for the first few legs. it was so quiet and very weird compared to the typical ragnar experience. anyway, happy to hear it went well. enjoy some recovery time.

Skip the finish line? huh?

OH, how I wish we had skipped the finish line! We sat there for a good 6 hours waiting impatiently and frying in the sun. NOT SO FUN!!!

Nice job on the race! I was runner #1, so I know half of your running routes well. I bet that little trek behind snow basin was fun in the dark, especially the sloshy snow! I think that would be a total blast to get to catch up to the "race" like that! I had fun just trying to catch the runners that had started 20 minutes before me!

Nice job on the ultra! I am curious what your finish time was, tell us when you know!

Kelli, we ended up at 26:38 or something like that. 5th ultra team and 57th overall. A week later I'm still smiling.

That is awesome!! Such a tough course to run an Ultra on and take 5th. WOW, congrats. I would for sure be smiling!
